Bachata and Salsa dance classes in the Tees Valley, Yarm near Middlesbrough.

Have you ever wanted to dance salsa? Or are you looking to refine your skills and take your dancing to the next level? At Tees Valley Salsa in Yarm, we offer a welcoming and supportive environment for everyone, from complete beginners to improvers and beyond!

We teach in a relaxed atmosphere and we have a wonderful following of people at our classes and monthly socials. Don't worry if you've never danced before, we teach right from beginners through to intermediates.

Our team consists of Joanne, Graham and Jess. We have all been dancing for many years and love teaching salsa and bachata too.

Here's what one of our students said about their experience -

"I looked for salsa lessons near me and I was so nervous to start, but the teachers were amazing and the people were so welcoming. I've learned so much and now have a new hobby I love as well as a new group of fantastic friends!"

Your first class — what to expect

We know walking into a dance class for the first time can feel intimidating. Here's what actually happens, so there are no surprises.

Before you arrive: No booking, no signup form, no commitment — just turn up. Aim to be there by 7:20pm so you've got time to settle in. Wear what you're comfortable in. Smooth-soled shoes work best (trainers can grip the floor and make turns awkward). Bring a bottle of water. You don't need a partner — honestly. Most of our regulars came alone.

When you walk in: You'll be greeted at the door, shown where to leave your stuff, and introduced to a few people. The class is informal and the atmosphere is warm — nobody is going to stare at you for being new.

During the class: We start with a short warm-up, then break down moves step by step at a slow speed before bringing it up to music. We rotate partners regularly, which sounds scary and isn't — it means you dance with lots of different people, learn faster, and don't get stuck. If something isn't clicking, ask. We've got three teachers on the floor (Graham, Jo and Jess) and we'd much rather repeat a step ten times than have you go home confused.

After the class: Most people stick around for a chat. Many of our students go on to come every week, join the monthly socials, or make friends they see outside the class entirely. There's no pressure — but the door's always open.

Cost: £8 drop-in, paid on the door. That's it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a partner to come to a class?
No — you can come on your own. Most of our students arrive single and we rotate partners during the class, so everyone gets to dance and nobody is left out. You'll meet people quickly.

I've never danced before. Can I still join?
Yes — complete beginners are very welcome. Our Wednesday evening class is built for people walking in cold with no experience. We break each move down step by step and pair you with more experienced dancers as you learn.

How much does a class cost?
The Wednesday Salsa class is £8 drop-in, paid on the door. Our Latin In Line class is £7 drop-in. No booking required — just turn up.

Where are the classes held?
At Yarm Fellowship Hall, West Street, Yarm TS15 9BT. There's free on-street parking nearby and the venue is easy to find in the centre of Yarm.

What time should I arrive?
Wednesday classes run from 7:30pm to 10pm. We recommend arriving by 7:20pm so you've got time to settle in. For Saturday socials, doors open 8:15pm with the class at 8:30pm.

What should I wear?
Whatever you feel comfortable in. Smart-casual is fine. The most important thing is footwear — shoes with a smooth sole that let you turn easily (not trainers with grippy rubber soles). Bring a bottle of water.

Do you teach bachata as well as salsa?
Yes — we teach both salsa and bachata. Our Wednesday class typically covers salsa with a bachata section, and the monthly Saturday socials feature music from both styles.

Where do your students travel from?
Yarm is our home, but our dancers travel from right across the Tees Valley — Stockton, Middlesbrough, Darlington, Hartlepool, Redcar, Billingham, Ingleby Barwick and beyond.
